Gedurende een periode van 5 weken gaan Nicole Segers en Leo Divendal hun atelier verplaatsen naar Atelier K84 aan de Keizersgracht in Amsterdam. Zonder van te voren af te spreken wat, nemen ze wekelijks werk mee naar het atelier in K84, een blind date.

Ter plekke ontwikkelen ze steeds een andere en nieuwe presentatie in de vorm van een expositie. Tijdens drie mastertalks zullen ze dit doen op basis van drie vooraf afgesproken thema’s.

In deze gesprekken en presentaties proberen beide kunstenaars in gesprek dichterbij het geheim van het kunstenaarschap te komen en hoe dat te presenteren en publiekelijk te maken. Het gangbare model van de van het museum afgeleide vorm van exposeren: gefixeerde gesublimeerde exposure van werken, wordt in dit plan losgelaten en het proces krijgt alle aandacht.

De wisselende ‘exposities’ zijn steeds op de vrijdag- en zaterdagmiddagen gratis te bezoeken tussen 13.00-18.00 uur, in aanwezigheid van beide kunstenaars.

For a period of five weeks, Nicole Segers and Leo Divendal will move their studio to Atelier K84 on Keizersgracht in Amsterdam. Without agreeing what in advance, they will bring work to the studio in K84 every week, a blind date. On the spot, they always develop a different and new presentation in the form of an exhibition. During three master talks, they will do this based on three pre-agreed themes.

In these talks and presentations, both artists try to get closer in conversation to the secret of being an artist and how to present it a publicly. The usual model of the museum-derived form of exhibiting: fixed sublimated exposure of works, is abandoned in this plan and the process is given full attention. The changing ‘exhibitions’ are always free to visit on Friday and Saturday afternoons between 1pm-6pm, in the presence of both artists.

 

MASTERTALK: LEO DIVENDAL & NICOLE SEGERS IN DIALOOG / in dialogue

 

Nicole Segers en Leo Divendal kennen elkaar al meer dan veertig jaar. Leo was Nicole’s leermeester in de jaren tachtig en dit mondde uit in een professionele vriendschap en een doorlopend gesprek over leven en fotografie.

Dit gesprek gaan ze in drie mastertalks met drie thema’s en public voortzetten aan de hand van het werk dat ze elke week meenemen naar het atelier. Daar vanuit richten ze in de ruimte van Atelier K84 een zeer tijdelijke expositie in. De drie ingangen zijn: fotografie & het theatrale, fotografie & het filmische en fotografie & het literaire. Dwars door dat alles heen reflecteren ze op het fotografisch proces en hoe het fotografisch werk beeldende kunst wordt.

Door de dialogen tussen de twee masterfotografen over hun eigen beeldmateriaal, leren de aanwezigen op indirecte wijze hoe hun eigen werk meer te verdiepen. Het werk van de leermeesters dat ter sprake komt bestaat uit soms bekendere werken, maar veelal nooit eerder vertoond materiaal, kleine werken, schetsen, opzetten, bronnen.

De deelnemers aan een mastertalk zijn getuige en toehoorder en kunnen het proces hier en daar mede bevragen. Zij zijn deelgenoot van een intieme en levendige uitwisseling tussen deze twee kunstenaars over hun werk en de achtergronden ervan en krijgen een diepgaand beeld van het artistieke proces. Hoe gaat dat in zijn werk? Waarom is er sprake van een ontwerp, hoe maakt het ontwerpen en publiceren integraal deel uit van je artistieke praktijk?

Nicole en Leo verhelderen hun geschiedenis in het licht van de fotografie, hoe verloopt de ontwikkeling van hun processen en hoe brengen ze hun werk naar buiten. Gesprek over master en student. Wat zijn hun inspiraties?

Niet jouw werk als deelnemer staat dus ter discussie, maar het werk van de masters zelf. Een unieke inkijk in de keuken, over hun keuzes en twijfels, over obstakels en inspiraties, over concepten en vooruitgang. Er is voldoende ruimte voor vragen.

Nicole and Leo have known each other for more than forty years. Leo was Nicole’s teacher in the 1980s and this culminated in a professional friendship and an ongoing conversation about life and photography.

They will continue this conversation in three ‘master talks’ based on three themes and public through the work they bring to the studio each week. Based on this, they will set up a very temporary exhibition in the space of Atelier K84. The three entries are: photography & the theatrical, photography & the cinematic, photography & the literary. Across all that, they reflect on the photographic process and how the photographic work becomes visual art.

Through the mutual dialogues between the two master photographers about their own imagery, the witnesses present indirectly learn how to deepen their own work more deeply. The work of the masters that is discussed consists of sometimes better-known works, but mostly never-before-seen material, sketches, set-ups, sources.

Participants in the master talk are witnesses and listeners and can help question the process here and there. They are part of an intimate and lively exchange between these two artists about their work and its background and get an in-depth view of the artistic process. How does it work? Why is there design, how does designing and publishing become an integral part of your artistic practice?

Nicole and Leo clarify their history in the light of photography, how do their processes develop and how do they get their work out there. Conversation on master and student. What are their inspirations?

So it is not your work as a participant that is under discussion, but the work of the masters themselves. A unique insight, about their choices and doubts, about obstacles and inspirations, about concepts and progress. There will be plenty of room for questions.

In deze talk licht het accent op de theatrale kant van beider werk, hoe foto’s en teksten een pose aannemen, zich als het ware direct richten tot de beschouwer. Welke elementen spelen daar een rol in, qua mise-en-scène, qua verstilling?

This talk highlights the theatrical side of both artists’ work, how photographs and texts assume a pose, addressing the viewer directly, as it were. Which elements play a role in this, in terms of mise-en-scène, in terms of stillness?

This talk focuses on the cinematic nature of their work, how their images show themselves in series in the sense of making a passage of time. Is there a scenario involved?

This talk focuses on the literary and visual nature of their work. How to call their work poetic, narrative, how to ‘read’ their work. How do images and texts relate to each other?

Op intekening kan deelgenomen worden aan een of meerdere van de drie mastertalks op de vrijdagen 2 mei, 9 mei & 16 mei tussen 10.45 en 13.00 uur. Inloop/koffie thee vanaf 10.30 uur, aanvang exact om 10.45 uur.Halverwege is er een korte break. De voertaal is in het Nederlands.

Leo Divendal (1947)

manifesteert zich vanaf 1977 als fotograaf en schrijver in tal van exposities, artikelen en boeken, lezingen en openingen van ander mans/vrouws werk.

Enkele belangrijke publicaties van zijn hand zijn o.a.: Kesikköprü, de gebroken brug; DIVENDAL; Journaal; Sea of Marmara; Vézelay of: de architectuur van de winter (roman & poëzie en foto’s); Grassen; The Road to Raton; Isabelle. Leo schreef, regisseerde en produceerde Piano Etudes in 2014; Twee korte films: La Marelle (2009), In Flanders Fields. Hij startte in 2018 met de zogenaamde moutarde-cahiers, uitgaves in eigen beheer samengesteld, ontworpen en geproduceerd, waarvan er inmiddels 23 zijn verschenen.

Leo was docent aan de afdeling fotografie en grafisch ontwerpen aan de Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam van 1993-2012. Tussen 2007 en 2020 gaf hij workshops in São Paulo en Amsterdam in samenwerking met Marcelo Greco uit São Paulo in Brazilië.

Leo leidde halverwege de jaren tachtig de afdeling fotografie van Cultureel Centrum De Moor in Amsterdam, alwaar hij Nicole Segers leerde kennen en begeleidde. Met Nicole stelde hij de internationale expositie De Vierde Wand in Amsterdam samen in 1991, met werk van 43 nationaal en internationaal werkende fotografen. Met Victor Levie ontwikkelde Leo het erbij behorende boek De Vierde Wand. Victor Levie was tevens de ontwerper van het boek en van de gelijknamige expositie. Nicole assisteerde Leo eind jaren tachtig gedurende enkele jaren.

Leo DIVENDAL taught in the photography and graphic design department at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam from 1993-2012. Between 2007 and 2020, he taught workshops in São Paulo and Amsterdam in collaboration with Marcelo Greco from São Paulo in Brazil.

Leo headed the photography department of Cultural Centre De Moor in Amsterdam in the mid-1980s, where he met and supervised Nicole Segers. With Nicole, he curated the international exhibition De Vierde Wand in Amsterdam in 1991, featuring work by 43 photographers working nationally and internationally. With Victor Levie, Leo developed the accompanying book De Vierde Wand. Victor Levie was also the designer of the book and the exhibition of the same name. Nicole assisted Leo for several years in the late 1980s.

Nicole Segers (1960)

is documentair fotograaf en maker van talloze tentoonstellingen en boeken in binnen- en buitenland. Haar werk komt tot stand in langdurige projecten. Ze werkte vele jaren in zuidelijk Afrika, waarna haar blik zich richtte op Europa. Ze is mentor en docent bij de Fotoacademie en daarbuiten editor en coach voor fotografen in diverse projecten.

Nicole werkt al meer dan twintig jaar samen met schrijver en journalist Irene van der Linde. Ze publiceerden een trilogie over de grenzen van Europa. In 2004 verscheen Het einde van Europa, ontmoetingen langs de nieuwe oostgrens (2004) – in Franse vertaling genomineerd voor de Prix du Livre Européen, een reis van 7000 km van Finland tot Bulgarije. Ze woonde een jaar in Istanbul waarna Het veer van Istanbul, ontmoetingen langs de Bosporus (2010) verscheen, tevens in het Frans verschenen als Les Passeurs d’Istanbul. Het sluitstuk van de trilogie is Bloed en honing, ontmoetingen op de grenzen van de Balkan (2020) waarin ze op zoek gaat naar de onzichtbare grenzen op de Balkan. Het boek werd verkozen tot een van de 10 mooiste fotoboeken van 2020 door de Volkskrant en won in de categorie beste tekst/fotoboek De Nederlandse Fotoboekenprijs.

Nicole’s werk was te zien in galeries en musea, in onder andere De Kunsthal in Rotterdam, in samenwerking met Rem Koolhaas in Brussel, in diverse festivals zoals BredaPhoto in Nederland, in Luxemburg, Polen en België en in Frankrijk tijdens de Aubenades, Rencontres Photographiques, Festival Photoreporter en Printemps Balkanique. De gehele Europese trilogie was te zien in Museum Het Valkhof in Nijmegen. Nicole’s werk is gepubliceerd in mainstream kranten en tijdschriften. Ze publiceert regelmatig in De Groene Amsterdammer.

Nicole begon haar carrière met het boek Wij vrouwen van het land over de plattelandsvrouwen in Nederland in samenwerking met fotografe Tea van Dam. Ze leerde Leo Divendal kennen in 1985 en richtte met hem haar allereerste solotentoonstelling in. Ze werkte een paar jaar met Leo als leermeester-leerling en werkte uiteindelijk samen met hem aan de internationale expositie De Vierde Wand, over de foto als theater. Ze geeft regelmatig lezingen over haar werk, is jurylid bij de Zilveren Camera, en is actief als bestuurslid van DuPho. In het verleden werkte Nicole als art director van ZAM, een tijdschrift over kunst en cultuur in Afrika.

Nicole Segers is a documentary photographer and creator of numerous exhibitions and books at home and abroad. Her work comes about in long-term projects. She worked for many years in southern Africa, after which her gaze turned to Europe. She is a mentor and lecturer at the Fotoacademie and outside of that she is an editor and coach for photographers in various projects.

Nicole has worked with writer and journalist Irene van der Linde for more than 20 years. They published a trilogy on the borders of Europe. In 2004 they published The End of Europe, encounters along the new eastern border (2004) – nominated in French translation for the Prix du Livre Européen, a 7000 km journey from Finland to Bulgaria. She lived in Istanbul for a year after which The Feather of Istanbul, encounters along the Bosphorus (2010) appeared, also published in French as Les Passeurs d’Istanbul. The final part of the trilogy is Blood and Honey, encounters on the borders of the Balkans (2020) in which she explores the invisible borders of the Balkans. The book was voted one of the 10 most beautiful photo books of 2020 by de Volkskrant and won The Dutch Photo Book Award in the best text/photo book category.
